Trip to Red River Gorge, Oct. 11-12

For our October trip, once again we’ll be headed to Kentucky for Rocktoberfest at the Red River Gorge. The Red is the premier destination for sandstone climbing east of the Rockies. Although most famous for its steep and pumpy sport climbs, an abundance of trad climbing can be had as well. The area is littered with a seemingly endless sea of crags, offering something for almost everyone.

Rocktoberfest is an annual fund-raising party put on by the Red River Gorge Climbers’ Coalition. The party starts on Friday, and carries through the weekend. It’s a guaranteed good time! Details on the Rocktoberfest activities can be found here. Pre-registering on the web site will save you a few bucks on admission.

Camping is available at the Rocktoberfest venue. Another popular choice for those wishing to camp in the middle of the action is Miguel’s Pizza. Miguel’s has started requiring reservations for camping, so be sure to reserve online if you plan to stay there. If you’re looking to camp somewhere a bit more quiet, Land of the Arches campground is your best bet.

As this is an overnight trip, everyone should make their own plans for transportation and lodging. Some folks will probably head up early, or stay a day late. If you’re looking for carpool companions, try using our Google Group. We’ll be meeting at the rest area near Rocktoberfest at 8am on Saturday and Sunday morning to partner up and go climbing.

For those planning to climb in Muir Valley, if you haven’t been before please be advised that you’ll need to go on their website and fill out a waiver beforehand.
