The May climbing trip will to Sand Rock this Saturday the 5th. Located near Leesburg, Sand Rock is a great destination for climbers of all ability levels. If you’re a beginner, there’s plenty of action with the fun topropes on the Jaws Block wall. For sport leaders, great choices include Kennel Club (5.8) and Lichen This (5.9) in the moderate range, and Misty (5.10c/d) or Dreamscape (5.11c/d) if you’re ready for a real challenge. Trad leaders can warm up on fun lines like Knob Wall (5.6) or push themselves on routes like Comfortably Numb (5.9+) or Gravy Train (5.10a). There’s really something for everybody at Sand Rock.

We’ll be meeting at the Marietta Park and Ride at 8:00am. Don’t be late!
For those coming from out of town or meeting us at the crag, here are the gps cordinents 34.1804, -85.817

He will have the La Sportiva 2012 line as well as some high altitude Mountaineering boots with him. No slide presentation this month, this is a “feet-on’ presentation! (disclaimer: unless you have a lucky foot size don’t expect to try shoes on). Please come out and make sure you know what you need to know about about climbing shoes, plus it is always good to know folks in the climbing biz. If there is interest. there is the potential for Norman to return this fall to give us a presentation on climbing rope.

From long slab routes to overhung roof cracks, Rumbling Bald has something for everyone.” For Saturday and Sunday the meeting time is 8:00am at the chalet (950 Main St. Chimney Rock, NC 28720), the parking is extremely limited so carpooling from the meeting place is recommended . Lets hope for perfect weather!

Hello climbers,
Helping spreading the word of a trail day this Saturday:

FYI we have a trail day this Saturday to help out our “loved to death”
local crag!
Chad Wykle put it this way:
Because Leda is one of the first outdoor climbing experiences that local beginner climbers have…….it is the ‘benchmark’ of how they perceive a climbing area is to be maintained–and that’s currently a bad thing.
We all know Leda needs a makeover, and finally the SCC has big plans to change things out there. Also we have the Access Fund trail builders in town to help us. Yesterday the AF guys did an assessment of Leda and we have a major trail day planned for this Saturday which includes rerouting trail, installing a bridge, and hundreds of dollars in wood materials to install retaining walls.
We have food, drinks and swag for all participants- we just need a big turnout this Saturday at 9am. Here is a link to our calendar event.
http://www.seclimbers.org/modules.php?name=NuCalendar&op=ShowEvent&month=4&day=7&year=2012&eventid=6
thanks,

The club climbing trip for March is this Saturday the 10th to Palisades, that is, to Blount County Palisades Park on Ebell Mountain near Oneonta, Alabama. We will meet at the Thornton Road Park and Ride at 7:00 am to carpool, or you can meet us there.

To get to Thornton Road Park-N-Ride, take I-20 west. 7 miles outside of I-258, take Exit 44 and turn right onto Thornton Road. At the first light take a right and then take a right at the three-way stop. Park with the other cars and climbers.

If you’re looking for a pleasant spot to bring friends new to climbing, Alabama’s Palisades Park is a great choice. At latitude 33.9602 and longitude -86.4774 not far from Birmingham, Palisades is a county park with a nice little cliffline running just below the parking lot. There is a good range of climbing difficulty, ranging from easy 5.4 to roofy 5.12. Climbs are single pitch and 30 to 80 feet. Everything can be easily top-roped and many routes have protection opportunities for trad leading. There are no bolted climbs. Each climber must register at the office and buy a $2 permit. The restrooms are heated and air conditioned.

You will recall that the January Atlanta Climbing Club trip was to T-Wall. About 15 hardy climbers braved the 30% chance of rain and made the drive to Chattanooga, TN. We were encouraged by no rain and patches of sunlight between Cartersville and Chattanooga. But on the other side of Chattanooga, the rain started. Nevertheless, we hiked up to T-Wall and found the rock wet. Even Art under the big roof had water on its corner crack in places. We bailed and went to Urban Rocks, the indoor rock climbing gym in Chattanooga. After several hours everyone was worn out and we went to Lupi’s for pizza and beer before heading home.

The February Climbing Club trip was to Jamestown, AL. Again, about 15 hardy climbers braved the cold, wind, and 10% chance of precipitation. Leaving Atlanta at 7am, it was 43 degrees F but had dropped to 27 degrees by the time we reached Jamestown. The winds were 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph that almost pushed the cars off the road. The farm road was passable with no fallen trees and the hike to the cliff line uphill but short enough. From left to right, Jim Allison lead Winter’s Respite 5.8 and top-roped Pumpkin Spice 5.10a. Mark Vonder Meulen top-roped The Great Stumpkin 5.10c after leading Pumpkin Patches 5.9+. Russ Moore lead Yum Yum Tree 5.7+. Denmark Blount lead Art Of Darkness 5.9 and set up a top-rope on Animal Farm 5.10. Gary Latimer lead Truth Or Consequences 5.8. Mark Vonder Meulen lead Medusa Tree 5.9 after falling on the 5.11 variation over the bulge. Denmark Blount lead the Wild Iris 5.9 crack under the power lines. All were anxious for their turn to climb to generate body heat. Fortunately the cliff sheltered us from most of the wind. The morning was overcast with occasional breaks in the clouds and occasional light mistings of snow flakes. The afternoon had more sun than clouds but it cooled off once the sun went behind the mountain. Sherry and Daniel left early for a concert. Jonathan and Dan headed for I-59 with plans for Hoserpens on Sunday. Aaron, Dustin, and Robbie headed for home as Dustin needed to get back to his wife and new baby girl. The remaining 9 including Danielle, Mark O’Neal, Tim, Frank, … headed for Las Palmas in Rome for Mexican food and beer. After a great day of climbing and full stomachs, we headed home, with the car Tim was riding in stopping at DQ for a blizzard.

        Denmark Blount 2/12/2012
