May 10th Club Trip to Starr Mountain

Join us this Saturday May 10th for our club trip to Starr Mountain, TN. While not a major destination, Starr Mountain holds some nice rock in a great and usually less crowded setting. Typical of other Tennessee climbing areas, a river has cut a canyon exposing cliffs high on its north side. The rock is characteristic good quality sandstone similar to that found in nearby locations. On the main upper tier you’ll find orange rock with sharp corners, cracks, and arĂȘtes, and roofs.

We will be carpooling from the Marietta Park and Ride and leaving by 8am sharp. Be sure there to get there a few minutes early so you don’t get left behind. Please see the link for park and ride location. http://maps.google.com/?q=33.941016,-84.527773+%28Marietta+Park+and+Ride%29

Directions: I-75 North from Chattanooga towards Cleveland. Exit 64 East. Follow to 411 North through Benton. A few miles past Benton, you’ll cross the Hiwassee River. Continue almost half a mile further and turn right on Spring Creek road into Gee Creek Wilderness Area. about half a mile after crossing the Hiawassee River. After about 2.3 miles, park in a pull off on the left near a culvert pipe next to railroad tracks. Hike across the tracks and find the uphill trail. Continue up the trail to a waterfall, then bear right and continue to the cliff line.
